A bot does what a users does with his/her browser but more!

Basically a web bot is a program that does things a user could do with his browser (Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer, Opera, etc.) but much, much more.

Browsing the internet the regular way is fun but has certain limitations. Limitations like that someone has to actually browse and use the browser. Hmm what does that mean? Well sometimes you want to check things automatically – like if you have been out-bided by someone on ebay or if someone has written a comment on a blog-post you find interesting. All those things are very time consuming and the time adds up quickly just for those kind of repetitive tasks.

A web bot is the perfect solutions for this matter of doing repetitive tasks. The web bot can do the same things that you can do with your browser – just a lot faster.

During the last days a lot of things could be read about the new search engine WolframAlpha. When i heard the phrase “new search-engine”, the author got my immediate attention, especially when the search engine is named after the famous mathematician Stephen wolfram.

Since search engines are also related to Webbots I will let you know about my first experience with Wolfram Alpha.

The First Impression

My first visit on the page WolframAlpha.com ended pretty quickly as the service had nost started back then. I had been told to come back in may when the service is going to launch.

Ok – that didn’t work – anyway i wanted to know more about WolframAlpha (WA) and why there is so much buzz about it. A quick research via google showed me a couple articles of lucky journalists that had been in the position to “pre beta test” WA.

My first though on the term “Search Engine” was – WOW – somebody new tries to compete with Google and Yahoo. After some detailed reading i figured out though that WA will be something different to a regular search engine, so very different from Google.

Since the main topic of this webbpage and blog are webbots, spiders and screenscrapers I though it it time for post just about this topic.

If you decide to create a webbot for a certain project you must decide what language you want to use and which one fits the webbot project best.

What language can you use to code a webbot, spider or scraper?

Basically it can be said that a webbot can be coded in any programming and scripting language. Depending on the bots purpose criteria have to be chosen which will help you to make the decision about the language to use. Those criteria are important because every language comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. However basically it does not matter if you use C, C++, Visual Basic, Asp-Net, Ruby, PHP, Java or any other language as long as the language supports the communication using a network protocol such as http, https, ftp etc.

Of course when choosing the language the coder’s or your preference and programming-language-knowledge also plays a big role.

After a long planning and development phase i can announce with proud that webboti.com goes live.

By far …  everything is not done yet and there still is a lot to do but the foundational work has been completed and very soon a lot of tools, tutorials and downloads will be released at this very page webboti.com
